Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera is Croatia’s most famous water-based national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Over thousands of years, travertine/tufa barriers have formed and created natural dams – resulting in lakes, caves and waterfalls, with these processes continuing to this day.
The park is famous for its 16 large, interconnected lakes, linked by cascades and waterfalls that shimmer in turquoise and emerald hues depending on the light.
Wooden walkways and well-marked trails take you right alongside the water, allowing you to experience the gorges and waterfalls up close – a dream for photography enthusiasts.
A good starting point for information and planning is the Znanstveno-stručni centar „Dr. Ivo Pevalek“, Josipa Jovića 19, 53231 Plitvička Jezera.
It is named after the researcher Dr. Ivo Pevalek, who demonstrated, among other things, that mosses and algae play a crucial role in the formation of tufa barriers.
Dense forests protect a diverse natural environment all around – with a little luck, you can sense the wilderness even without seeing any animals.
Tip: Start early and wear non-slip shoes, as the walkways can be wet depending on the weather.
