Peneda-Gerês National Park

Peneda-Gerês National Park in northern Portugal is a true natural paradise and also the only national park in the country – founded in 1971.
Between granite mountain ranges, deep valleys and clear rivers, you’ll find wild landscapes with waterfalls, natural swimming pools and tranquil reservoirs.
A highlight is the Mata da Albergaria, a particularly impressive woodland area and one of the park’s iconic sites.
The culture is also fascinating: in villages such as Soajo and Lindoso, you can see traditional stone architecture and the typical granite grain stores („Espigueiros“).
The park borders Spain directly and, together with the neighbouring area, forms the Gerês–Xurés UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
With a little luck, you may encounter free-roaming Garrano horses or spot rare animals and plants in one of the most biodiverse regions of the Iberian Peninsula.
