Santa Maria In Calanca

Santa Maria in Calanca is a sunny mountain village in Val Calanca (Italian-speaking Graubünden), situated at around 955 m above sea level on a south-facing terrace.

Thanks to its mild, Insubrian climate, not only conifers grow here, but also chestnut trees and fruit trees – and in some gardens even palm trees. The village is characterised by an impressive historic ensemble: a medieval tower, the parish church (first mentioned in 1219) and the former Capuchin hospice.

Despite its peaceful location, the village is easily accessible – just around 20 minutes by car from Bellinzona.
For hiking enthusiasts, Santa Maria is an ideal starting or finishing point: the challenging Sentiero Alpino Calanca ends here, while the quiet valley route Via Calanca towards Rossa begins here.
